“Every block of stone has a statue inside it…”

I spend a fair bit thinking about who we are as humans and how we’re not really getting the most out of our lives.

Michelangelo said “Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” and it set off me thinking about how that’s actually a quote that can be applied to humans and their own lives. We are the sculptors of our own lives and it is up to us to build our lives.

Just as the sculptor starts with a raw block of stone, we all begin our lives as blank canvases with our whole lives ahead of us. It is our decision as to what we do with our life. If, when were born we were automatically assigned the role we would do in life, it would be a different story but it is not. We are in charge.

It isn’t even just at birth. At any point in our lives we have the power to make a change and choose a different path.

It can be a daunting thing to think about what you’re going to do in life but there’s also something quite reassuring and freeing in knowing the fact that you and you alone are in charge of your life. You are the only person who can sculpt your life.

So, in the same way that sculptors create beautiful statues from blocks of stone, apply this to your own life. You are responsible for sculpting your into being the life you want it to be. Not your family, not your friends, peers, colleagues, bosses or anyone else you meet. You and only you are the only one who decides what your life looks like.

See you next week.
