Everybody’s a gangster…

Like most people, after consuming so much content my head is full of so many different quotes and if I’m honest, I probably forget a lot of them.

But for a reason I’m not quite sure of, the quote above is one that has always stuck with me and continually comes to mind during conversations with people about doing something more with life or wanting to start something new.

“Everybody’s a gangster until it’s time to do gangster shit.”

I think it’s a pretty straight forward quote that explains itself.

However, let me quickly explain it.

Breaking it down to the simplest level it’s about talk versus do. I’ve written about that quite a few times this year, especially over the last few months but that’s because it’s something I’m incredibly interested in but also incredibly passionate about.

Everybody’s a gangster means everybody likes talking about the things they’re going to do with their life. We all know someone and we’ve all probably done it ourselves. But when it comes down to actually doing the work, they’re nowhere to be seen.

Talking about what you’re going to do is the easy part, it’s why every single person does it. It’s easy to sit there and say “I’m going to do this and then this…” blah, blah, blah. Back it up with action and actually make those words a reality.

If your circle is full of people who just talk then you’re in the wrong circle and you need new friends.

“Everybody’s a gangster until it’s time to do gangster shit.”

Don’t be one of those people who just talks about what they’re going to do, when it comes time to do the “gangster shit” and get your hands dirty then back up your words with the action required and turn your life into what it should really be. There are so many of us sitting at home, living life at only 10 or 20% of our true potential but most are scared of the seemingly hard work that’s needed to push through that.

Now, I know that I’m nowhere near reaching my full potential. I’m not even remotely close. But I do know and accept that I will only reach it if I prioritise doing over talking about it. It’s only a small example but coming into 2020 I wanted to get better at writing so I decided that I would post weekly on here. Do vs talk.

Whether or not I’ve actually improved is a debate for another day but I would still be in the same position I was in at the start of the year if I just talked about wanting to get better at writing. Instead, I’m closing in on 50 Medium posts.

If you want that next level, that level that most people would regard as “gangster” then you have to be willing to put the work in that matches it.

Trust me, life’s better as a gangster than it is sitting on the sofa.

Put the work in.

See you next week.
