Keep your word.
Like a lot of people, I was watching the UFC 254 last night and witnessed one of the most incredible moments in the sport.
Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Justin Gaethje in the second round to defend his lightweight and take him to 29–0. Post fight he breaks down in tears.
Throughout his entire career, his father had been there by his side, guiding him along the way. His father had a vision for him. To be an undefeated champion and ranked the number 1 P4P fighter in the world.
Unfortunately, Khabib lost his father during the Covid-19 pandemic, a massive blow the champion as his father was his best friend and guiding light.
In the post fight interview, Khabib shocked the world and announced that this was his last fight and he would be retiring from MMA. This came after speaking to his mother after the passing of his father, she didn't want him to fight again if his father wasn’t by his side. He promised her he had one more fight to go and then he would walk away. He gave his word. Khabib’s a man of his word and I truly believe we won’t see him inside an octagon again.
It got me thinking about the importance of keeping your word. I think the importance of it has been lost with some people.
When you say you’re going to do something, do it. No ifs, buts or maybes.
If you tell someone you’re going to be somewhere at a certain time, you be there. If you say you’re going to do X, you best do X.
Keeping your word is about showing your integrity and your morals.
Personally, I like to think I’m a man of my word. If I say I’m going to do something then I’ll be doing it. I’m not a fan of saying something and then failing at it. Let’s take timekeeping for anything, I hate being late for anything so if I can I try to be at minimum 5 minutes early for everything.
Practicing the art of keeping your word will always stand you in good stead. Being a person of your word earns you respect from those around you. Nobody likes a person who breaks promises or doesn't fulfill promises.
Khabib kept his word.
Make sure you keep yours.
Congratulations on an incredible career, Khabib. I hope you find the happiness and peace you seek and deserve in retirement.
Father’s plan is complete.
See you next week.
