Stop taking yourself so seriously.

I’ve been giving myself a fair bit of stick over the last week or so for not being as productive as I think I should be but I’ve been thinking about it today and with the year that 2020 has been, I’ve come to the realisation that I’m probably being a little harsh on myself.

Now I’m not the only one that takes themselves too seriously. I’m not the worst for it but at times, I have to do everything and I have to do it now. I was sat there earlier today and I just suddenly had the thought that I’m literally an organism sat on a ball of rock hurtling through space which is billions and billions of light-years wide.

I’m well aware that I put far too much pressure on myself to succeed in this thing called life. Now, that isn’t a bad thing because I believe striving and pushing for better is good and something that we should all do. However, we place too much pressure on ourselves, especially at a young age. Social media certainly doesn’t help because it paints a false picture for you in terms of how successful others around you seem to be and a false picture around the work it takes to get there. One thing we should all remember is that social media is solely a highlight reel of peoples lives. No one is out here posting their failures.

Taking yourself too seriously means that from time to time you’ll miss out on the little things in life, the things that truly make us happy and things that we should probably pay a little more attention to. Taking an evening off to have dinner with your family or some friends isn’t going to stop you from reaching your goals.

Life is weird, this year has proved it more than any year we’ve gone through yet. You will have ups and downs, good days and bad days, good weeks and bad weeks, and that’s ok. Personally, assuming that the path to success is just one straight line and things get easier and easier is naive and a bit stupid. Life is ups and downs and whenever you’re on one of those down slopes, putting extra, unnecessary pressure on yourself just isn’t needed.

Ups don’t last forever but neither do those down periods so keep going. The same way that the sun still comes up in the morning no matter what happens, we keep going.

Don’t take yourself too seriously, nobody knows what they’re doing and being real for a second, none of us are getting out of this thing called life alive so we might as well have a laugh whilst we’re going about our business.

See you next week.
