Why the comfort zone is slowly killing you

Your comfort zone is a lovely place, isn’t it? The clue’s in the title, it’s comfy. And everyone loves being comfy.

“The comfort zone is a lovely place but nothing ever grows there.”

When you’re chasing more in life, when you’re chasing something more than the normal, a level of living that the average person won’t achieve then your comfort zone is the one place you cannot stay in.

Comfort zones feel good because everything inside it feels normal, you’re comfortable at that level. It doesn’t require that much effort to stay there, which is why most will stay there because it doesn’t take that much effort to maintain at that level.

But that’s the exact reason you need to push beyond it.

If you want to access the next level in life, you have to venture past the boundaries of your comfort zone and see what is beyond it. That does mean that some things and some people may have to be left behind but when you realise what’s possible when you do push past, you’ll understand why those things had to be left behind.

Many successful people say that life actually only begins once you step beyond the boundaries of your comfort zone.

In my own life, my comfort zone is something I have been fighting with for a long time. For a while I have wanted to do more with my life and strive for that next level but my comfort zone has always been there trying to hold me back. It’s a difficult thing to break away from because it’s what I’ve been used to for so long. It takes a lot to break your comfort zone but then also consistently keep pushing so that new settle and set up a new comfort zone.

There isn’t really any advice I can give about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone because I’m still figuring it myself but I suppose there is one very simple tactic. Say yes to everything.

When someone presents you with a challenge or a new opportunity and you’re a little unsure about it because it’s outside of your normal comfort zone, say yes to it and then figure it out. Remember, nothing changes if nothing changes. If it’s a new job role that has skills you don’t have yet, say yes and go away and learn. If you train yourself to automatically say yes first, you’ll find that you’re slowly pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

Remember, nothing good ever grows in your comfort zone. Push yourself.

See you next week.
